About Whisky Club #20
The Old Kempton Whisky Club was created for true whisky fans - weather you collect it, drink it or share it with friends. Our Whisky Club releases are 4 times a year and created exclusively by our distillers for club members only.
This February’s release received the highest scores ever on our internal tasting panel, and it nearly didn't exist. It started with a phone call from one of our cooperages, Transwood, who told us about this beautiful Tawny cask previously used to mature coffee beans. Initially we weren't keen on the cask, thinking that the acidity of the coffee would be hard to balance and wary of producing a 'gimmick' whisky, however, a few weeks later Rob was visiting the cooperage and took the opportunity to smell the cask and purchased it on the spot.
The cask had the rich aroma of an excellent quality tawny and the slightest hint of freshly brewed coffee and dark chocolate. Intrigued to find out the story of the cask, we called Dutschke Wines in the Barossa Valley, where the cask originated from, and the producer of some of our favourite fortified wines (and fortified wine casks). We learned they had collaborated with coffee roasters in both Australia and America to age green coffee beans in Tawny casks prior to roasting. This project then inspired Wayne Dutschke and his team to experiment with infusing roasted coffee into Tawny during maturation. They produced one cask for this experiment, which was available to sample exclusively at their cellar door, and it is this cask that found its way down to us in Kempton.
About Coffee Tawny
Aroma: A beautiful rich aroma with tinned peaches, strawberries, pears, and oranges giving way to fresh coffee, caramel, raspberry jam, and vanilla.
Palate: The Palate is bright and complex with plenty of orange, oak, filter coffee, butterscotch, and mixed spices. The coffee brings in an interesting astringent note that sits a bit higher on the palate and carries the other flavours through the finish.
Finish: More peaches, orange peel, and a touch of Szechuan pepper with dark chocolate. This is a great whisky to sit with and let develop in the glass. It keeps changing and opens up with time and warmth and if you leave the empty glass to sit for a while, you will get a beautiful cocoa aroma.
It was finished in a one of a kind Coffee Tawny cask from the renowned Dutschke Wines in the Barossa Valley. The team at Dutschke used the cask to infuse coffee beans into their Tawny, leaving the cask with a complex aroma exhibiting fortified wine and coffee characteristics.
We filled the cask with a combination of Tawny and Bourbon matured whisky and expecting it would take on flavour quickly in the warmer summer weather we decided to place it near the front of the bond store so that we could keep a close eye on it.
