The Old Kempton Distillery Whisky Club cask selection is always a favourite time for the Old Kempton Distillery team and, in particular, Head Distiller Rob Tyson.
Our Whisky Club members are in for an extra special treat this month with this beautiful cask from Seppeltfield in the Barossa Valley.
Shiraz grapes are at the heart of Barossa Valley winemaking, and few have been doing it longer than Seppeltsfield who have been making fortified wine in the Barossa since their establishment in 1851.
The fortified shiraz style is one of the key distinguishers of Australian Fortified Wine and will often produce a sweeter more fruit driven wine than the traditional styles from Portugal. This cask was coopered especially for us by Master Cooper Andrew Young at YN Oak (right next door to Seppeltsfield) and sent down to us for filling in late 2017. After maturing for just on five years the whisky has built up an immense richness with some pretty intense dried fruit and spice elements with some really interesting tropical flavours creeping in.
All whisky starts with two things - an incredible cask and some equally incredible new make spirit. Our new make spirit is well known for it’s floral highlights and smooth characteristics - these florals have blended perfectly with the sweet fruity elements of the cask to create an unforgettable Whisky Club release.

About Fortified Shiraz
Aroma: A pronounced but clean nose with polished oak furniture, leather and rum & raisin chocolate. Gives way to elegant stewed fruits, candied orange and malt.
Taste: Sweet and rich across the palate with plenty of malt & oak. The opens out with rum & raisin chocolate, fruit jam, orange peel and wine gums coming in to provide the complexity.
Finish: A long and complex finish with oak, cedar and mixed spices coming to the fore. Hints of vanilla, almond and cherry ripe help close out a great whisky.
This cask was matured in for 5 years in a ex-fortified Shiraz cask from Seppeltsfield. Seppeltsfield, in the Barossa Valley, is well known for its long and interesting history. Shiraz grapes are at the heart of Barossa Valley winemaking and few have been doing it as long as Seppeltsfield - who started in 1851.

Enter the Draw
Each quarter, you are automatically entered into the ballot to receive an exclusive Old Kempton Whisky Club Members only release. You will be given the opportunity to opt out prior to the ballot day, if it is a whisky that you’re not interested in. If it’s a whisky that takes your fancy, you can also select to ‘double-up’ and purchase two bottles if you are successful in the ballot.
The first Member to double-up receives bottles 1 and 100 of the release. Ballot winners will be randomly chosen once entries close.

If your name is drawn in the Ballot, your bottle is secured, and payment will be taken at that time. Your bottle will be sent straight out for you to enjoy.
If you are unsuccessful in winning a bottle, there is nothing to pay or do – except anticipate the next exclusive release.
